MPA Twinning Projects

The project will bring together MPA managers and other partners to work together (thus forming ‘twinnings’) on topics of shared interest. This builds on the earlier EU-funded initiative on MPAs in the Atlantic and takes it to the next level: continuing to foster MPA networking around the Atlantic, deepening understanding of the ecological and socio-economic needs (and pressures) of spatial protection measures, and fostering the effectiveness and coherence of MPAs and marine conservation measures at a broad international level.

The topics for the three twinning partnerships are:

  1. Cooperation and common strategy between MPA networks of managers in the Atlantic region
  2. MPAs and coastal resilience, coping with rapid changes
  3. Marine mammal protection, a way to enhance transatlantic cooperation between MPAs
  4. Marine turtles protection, through an adaptation of the Marine Mammals toolkit (in development)
